Monica wanted to incorporate fitness into her daily lifestyle and routine. She couldn't get exercise regimens to stick, and she lacked equipment & resources, time, and motivation.
A GYM BUDDY AT YOUR FINGER TIPS
Spuddy is a mobile fitness app that can be utilized anywhere, any time. To capitalize on the short periods of free time during someone’s busy schedule, Spuddy eliminates any excuse for not having time to exercise. Workouts are generated from objects within a users’ direct surroundings. By simply taking a picture, users are able to substitute gym equipment with selected items within their environment.
PROCESS
This was a 1 week project during my first week at General Assembly. As the sole UX Designer on this project, I was tasked to create a solution that would address a pain point in another student's daily life.
DELIVERABLES
RESULTS & REFLECTION
A different approach to fitness showed promise during feedback with users. Spuddy’s message resonated well, but most importantly, Spuddy became a viable solution for Monica. Her pain points were addressed with an approach catered for her personality and lifestyle.
Though current technology has constraints, an earlier version of Spuddy could subsidize futuristic features for a more feasible alternative. For example, to subsisdize the camera and recognition feature, a drop down menu would be provided with preselected items found within a household. Additional features also include expanding Spuddy’s scope, such as using the app on public transportation, at work, or even while on vacation. Next steps for Spuddy include building the navigation, creating an interactive prototype, and iterating designs for a better user experience.
SPUDDY MASCOT STYLEGUIDE
Spuddy was created to be a unisex character that could appeal to everyone. The shape and colors of his body emulate those of a potato, and his accessories are similar to simple work out clothes. His body is made up of warm tones and his body-suit is an energetic yellow, which brings forth the playfulness to the app.
